An Arch Through an Arch

The first warm rays of sunlight illuminate the North Window (and Turret Arch in the distance) on a crisp October morning in Arches National Park. I was there almost an hour before sunrise, yet two other photographers were already perched in the small cliff-side space facing this scenery. There was just enough room for one more, so I carefully climbed up and joined them. Finally, the sandstone arch before us began to glow in the morning light. Conversation stopped and the only sound to be heard was that of camera shutters. A small portion of a third arch—the South Window—can be seen on the left. For a sense of scale, look carefully for the two small specks at the base of Turret Arch. They’re early morning hikers!
